How the service is provided: Mental health assessment is a clinical evaluation provided by an eligible individual either at specified times or in response to treatment, or when significant changes occur. It is a process of gathering information to assess client needs and functioning in order to determine appropriate service/treatment based on identification of the presenting problem, evaluation of mental status, and formulation of a diagnostic impression. The outcome of mental health assessment is to determine the need for care, and recommend appropriate services/treatment and/or the need for further assessment. Results of the mental health assessment shall be shared with the individual to develop a treatment plan.
Who can participate? Youth, adolescents, and adults ages 5 to 65 who exhibit signs of a mental illness.
Based on the results of your assessment you will be placed in one of our following treatment programs:
Our Community Psychiatric Supportive Treatment Services staff (CPST) work closely with our individuals on a daily and weekly basis in order to ensure they have their treatment needs met, including medication adherence, assisting with obtaining benefits, healthcare entitlements, housing resources, and other items to strive towards better self-efficacy and self-sufficiency.
We act as a bridge between our individuals and their service providers -- both within our agency and within the community. We partner with the criminal justice system, area hospitals, and a variety of social service partners to ensure the most comprehensive services are available. We take a team approach to individuals’ treatment by working with psychiatrists, nurses, employment specialists, peer support specialists, parole/probation officers, case managers, and program supervisors.
Services are delivered in the community (individuals’ homes, community sites, hospitals, jails, nursing homes, etc.) as well as at our locations in Cuyahoga County.
What is TBS?
TBS is a set of community-based clinical services provided to individuals who are having difficulties with social, communication, problem solving, conflict-resolution, and/or independent living skills. Therapeutic mentors are trained professionals who work with clients to develop and practice these skills in the community.
Who can participate?
Youth, adolescents, and adults who are in need of positive mentoring and are able to participate.
Model of Treatment Social skills are important because they allow children to have positive experiences at home, school, and in the community. In addition, the program uses Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help client’s change their thoughts and behaviors as it relates to social, communication, problem solving, conflict-resolution, and independent living skills.
How does the program work?
The client and therapeutic mentor may meet at the individual’s home, at school, or in the community to address and practice social, communication, problem-solving, conflict-resolution, and independent living skills. The QMHS will meet with the individual on a weekly basis at the beginning of treatment; however, the frequency of contact may decrease over time based on individual’s need and progress. In addition, the therapeutic mentor will meet with the client, parent(s)/guardian, and the Lead QMHS on a regular basis to evaluate monitor progress. Based on the needs of the individual, the length of the program may vary. The individual, parent(s)/caretakers, therapeutic mentor, and counselor will decide when the individual has completed treatment. Program completion will occur once the individual’s treatment goals related to the program have been successfully completed.

Peter James Development IHBT program, is an evidence-based practice that offers fast, frequent and family-focused treatment and support to stabilize at-risk children and their families. IHBT offers immediate, short-term and intensive mental health treatment and support services for children who are at risk of an out-of-home placement or are just returning home, as well as for other serious family crises.
Families referred to the IHBT program are seen quickly and often, depending on the urgency of the case. Services include therapy as well as community psychiatric supportive treatment, social services and 24/7 crisis response. The IHBT team will work with the child and family at home, at school or in other community settings.
Family involvement is key. Treatment plans are tailored to each individual and family, based on an in-depth mental health assessment, an analysis of child and family strengths, and family input. Careful attention to safety planning and the right mix of aftercare services keeps each child on the path to success after discharge.
Referrals for IHBT Services may come from a variety of sources.
Medicaid (including Buckeye Community Health Plan, CareSource, Molina Healthcare of Ohio, Paramount Advantage and United Healthcare Community Plan of Ohio), groups are facilitated by experienced mental health clinicians.
Peter James Development & Independent Living, Inc. accepts Medicaid and Medicare. Many plans have a Medicaid version and a non-Medicaid version, so be sure to identify which you have. We also offer a sliding scale fee schedule for those who qualify. If you have private insurance, we would love the opportunity to provide your care. While we do accept private insurance, you can apply for our sliding scale. This means payment is based on your income. Payment is due at the time of service. We will also give you information needed to submit claims to your own insurance company.
In addition, we offer a 50% off discount to individuals who pay in full at the time of appointment. We do our best to accommodate different payment options. If a individual is eligible for the sliding scale as well, then the individual will be offered either the sliding fee or the prompt-pay discount, whichever gives the better discount.
